Domain Name

Your domain name is your web address. It is your unique identifier on the internet. When registering a domain name, it is very important to know the difference between Generic domains and country code domains.

Generic (or General) Domains do not target a specific country or a geographic location. If your website aim is to target global visitors it is best to register:

  • .com: if you are a commercial organization.
  • .net: if you are in the technology or network infrastructure fields.
  • .org: if you are a non-profit organization.
  • .info: if you are an informational site.

It is worth mentioning that none of the mentioned domain extensions have any restrictions on domain registration and can be used interchangeably for personal, business, informational and non-profit use.

On the other hand, if your website is targeting a specific country or geographic location it is recommended to register the domain extension of that area. For example, if you company only targets UK customers it would be better for your brand and even from the search engines perspective if you register a .co.uk domain. It is important to note here that some country code extensions restrict the use for the residents or for the people doing business with that country.

There are a number of services that are associated with domain registration such as domain forwarding, email hosting, private registration and DNS management.  It is very important to understand whether your domain registrar offers such services and for what cost.

Most of the internet one keyword or even two-keyword domain names have been registered since that late 90s. However, if your website name is brand able, there is a good chance that you will find your domain available. If it wasn’t, you can search by trying different keyword variations and/or searching different domain extensions. You can check domain name availability from here.

Another important thing to note here is the fact that having a domain name is not enough to have your website or email up and running. A web host is needed to store and serve your files/emails. You can read more about web hosting from here.

There are a number of domain name registrars through which you can register your domain. The top players in the domain name registration market are: Godaddy, 1and1 and Network Solutions. We highly recommend using Godaddy for its competitive prices, well reputation and the bunch of free extras that they offer with each domain.
